Nerostási

Good intentions have a way of leading somewhere dark. Andreas Karelis, a folklorist with a tape recorder and unshakeable certainty about his mission, climbs to Nerostási to document a dying village's last songs.

What he finds breaks every rule of time and memory: two sisters, one ancient and failing, one impossibly young and unchanged since the mountain spring stopped flowing seventy years ago. Eleni holds the village's dying traditions in her fading mind. Despina holds them perfectly, eternally — and has become as trapped by their preservation as the songs themselves.

As Andreas presses deeper into questions the village has agreed never to answer, he discovers that the most dangerous scholars are those who confuse salvation with possession. In the shadow of an empty fountain, he must choose between the truth he came to find and the harm that finding it inflicts.

Some stories can only be told by learning when not to tell them.
